COMMUNITY STANDARDS BYLAW
Beetle infested trees must be slated for disposal for two main reasons:
- To prevent spreading the infestation to healthy trees and
- To prevent fires, as the dead trees would be fuels for a devastating wildfires
- Time is always of the essence regarding either objective. Beetle infested trees must be effectively disposed of in the shortest amount of time to keep live beetles from migrating to healthy trees and larvae from developing into mature beetles which would then fly to healthy stands. This should best take place in winter and early spring before the larvae typically hatch.
Pitch tubes are a distinguishing sign that a tree may be infested with mountain pine beetle. The small globs of creamy resin are the trees natural defense to 'pitch' the beetle out of the tree.
Mountain pine beetle infested trees are cut and burned to kill the beetles living underneath the bark. Infested trees must be controlled before June 15 to ensure the beetles do not emerge and fly on to infest other healthy pine trees.
Dead trees could be ignited by lightning or human activity at any time with possibly devastating consequences.
R.Osmond Tree Services is a company you could hire to remove the infested tree(s). They follow through the whole process of cutting and disposing of the tree for you. If you’re interested you can call (780) 624-1975 or (780) 618-9113. Should you remove the tree yourself, please do not take it to the local Transfer Site within Grimshaw. All Pine Beetle infested trees are to be taken to Long Lake Regional Waste Management Services Commission. For site hours there please call: (780)971-2200.
Also please make sure that the infested tree is in fact on your property and not that of your neighbors or on the Town boulevard. Should you have questions as to how much Town boulevard abuts your property please call (780) 332-4626.
