Recycling
Why Recycle?
Most of our trash is deposited in landfills. Due to the vast amount of trash generated, landfills are quickly running out of space. Unfortunately, that is not the only problem. Poorly managed sites cause pollution, and endanger the health of near-by residents. Landfills, as havens for rats and flies, are perfect breeding grounds for infectious diseases.
While maintaining landfill sites is expensive, the costs of long term monitoring after landfill closure are astronomical. Finding new sites is so difficult that many communities ship waste to regional landfills, in spite of the ever increasing cost of transportation.
Incineration, another popular way of eliminating trash, decreases the landfill space required by 60% to 70%, and can be used to generate steam and/or electricity. However, incineration is very expensive and produces toxic trash (including metals like lead, mercury, cadmium, etc.).
Waste management strategies like burying or burning trash in landfill sites, are not viable alternatives anymore. Under governmental pressure to reduce waste, many communities are beginning to see value in recovering selected waste products that can be collected, processed and sold for recycling.
Recycling saves money, landfill space and energy, while conserving our natural resources. At the heart of the Recycle Plus Program, is a genuine commitment to communities, and a determination to improve our quality of life by providing a professional recycling service.
RECYCLING
The recycle mark is a small recycle triangle stamped into plastic with a number in the centre. All plastics which can be recycled will have this stamp somewhere on them (food or beverage containers have it on the bottom.)
For the bins marked Tin & Plastic, all aluminum and tin food containers can go in, as can plastic bags or wrap. We can also accept plastics which have a 1, 2, 4 and 5 recycle mark on them.
Please put only glass jars into the glass bin. Please indicate that we cannot recycle ceramics or clay objects in the glass bins.
